The International Karatedo Gojukai Association (IKGA) was formed in 1965. It is a world-wide organization that currently spans over 60 countries and regions. It is the official organization representing the Yamaguchi style of Goju-ryu. It is also sometimes referred to as the Yamaguchi Gojukai. A number of other Goju groups and individuals have their roots tied to Gogen Yamaguchi, but they no longer maintain these ties.
The growth of IKGA started in the 1960s with several teachers going overseas. Among these teachers were Gogen Yamaguchi’s three sons. A number of people came from all over the world and studied under Gogen Yamaguchi. This trend increased with the formation of the Karate College that had its official opening in 1973.
Events such as seminars and tournaments are regularly held by the IKGA. Each country has their own events but there are also international events held every year. The first international tournament held was at Meiji Jingu in Tokyo, Japan in 1977.
The International Karatedo Gojukai Association began to hold World Championships in 1993. The first one was held in Chiba, Japan. The 2nd World Championships were held in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1997. The 3rd World Championships were held in Perth, Australia in 2001. Rotterdam, Holland hosted the 4th World Championships in 2005 and South Africa held the 5th World Championships in Cape Town in 2009. The 6th World Championships will be held in Mumbai, India in December 2013, and in 2017, Canada held the 7th Championships, renamed as the 7th IKGA Global Championships in Richmond, B.C.
The 7th IKGA Global Championships will be held in 2021 in Tokyo, Japan.
Regional events such as the Asian Pacific Tournaments are held regularly. The European Block holds an annual seminar and tournament.
A number of important milestones are occurring. Many member countries are celebrating important anniversaries. Among these, in 2013, Australia marked their 50th anniversary of the Gojukai. A special event was held to commemorate this auspicious milestone.
The IKGA has an exciting future ahead.
